What was the best advice given to you in chess

TetsuoShima  depends on what level you are at. If you are at 2000 or above you can find most of your weaknesses.

If you are rated say 1200 then you will never find your mistaks on your own.

You would need to write down your moves on a few games and have a very strong player look at your games and he will tell you what are your mistakes and also how you can avoid the mistakes in the future.

This would greatly increase your game.  By the way players who are rated 1000 to 1300 and just play blitz will learn very little.

If you are rated 1500  same thing except you need a player rated at least 2000 to point out your mistakes. The stronger the "coach" the better.

In addition tactics are very important at almost any level so if you have something like tactics trainer  be sure to use it.

If youi are rated 1900 still you are making mistakes which need to be corrected and still you need a much stronger player to point out the mistakes and still you need tactics but now you need to start learning the openings and pick a small number of openings to learn very well.

What if you never have a chess coach much stronger than you?  I never had a chess coach stronger than me or even a chess coach--then your goal is to play the strongest players you can possibly play and learn from how they  play and try to learn from your mistakes on your own.

Tactics such as tactics trainer are still improtant after your reach even the 2200 level.

Also at any level you must learn the very rudimary endgames especially king and pawn end games. I think there are books on this plus videos.

So if you are 1000 or 1200 level it is fairly easy to advance.

One more piece of advice--what ever level you are-- strive to play the highest rated players possible--you will learn from games vs the strong players.

Hey winer, you must be Bluefin Tuna then. You don't look like tuna, that must be your party outfit that you have on.

tuna is awesome... i always wanted to try bluefin, but i dont find a sushi restaurant that has it were i live, i mean its already hard to find a sushi restaurant where sushi tastes like sushi

I don't really understand sushi, I always go for the cooked stuff.

but isnt bluefin totally wasted when you cook it? isnt it just so expensive because of the sushi quality??

Think of things from your opponent's point of view. What's a good plan for him, and more importantly-- how to stop it?

REST!

As it does not matter how much you know if your not thinking clearly or as sharp you possibly can in a situation. When i get my rest i feel more creative than when i am playing a game a little sleepy or body feels tired from work.

do not drink before logging in, and you will have a superior score/win-rate.  Chess with a friend should be matched measure-for-measure however Laughing.  I really need to heed my own advice in the 1st instance...

Also if you want to be liked you have to say:

Fischer was crazy

Kasparov was the best of all time

Tal was better than Fischer

All great advice, i must say.

For moi, it was:

" Win with White, draw with Black".

It was/is always an great comfort to remind myself of that, not just for sentimental reasons, but it gives me certain perspectives whenever i play a game. Chess is definitely more of an hobby for me nowadays, but even so...that piece of advice still governs my play, or mentality facing any opponent regardless of strength.

-if i drew vs an stronger opponent as White, i'd be like, "heh. It's actually a 'win' for me"..

-although, if i drew (as white) vs an equal or lower(!?) rated player, "man..gotta really lock down on my tactical and/or positional play!". And go through the game, analysing or re-evaluatating my lines etc.

-i'm always looking to equalize as black, soo i'm satisfied if i draw. But the exception is if i manage to grab the initiative (it's as if im white and on the offensive). Lookout!

Don't apply GM theory to games below 2000.

Nowadays, if you don't reach IM before 2 years old, chess is not for you.
