I would say that mine would definetly be the rook. I have won plenty of games {in real life} with my rooks only

For me, it is the pawn--the poor sacrificial pawn who tries so hard to establish him/herself as maybe a bishop or someday even a rook, but alas life is short.  I always root for the underdog.

I like the bishop. Like the rook and the queen it's a long ranged piece and it means it's able to pin and skewer other pieces. Though, as the horse, it's a "light" piece and it's not such a big deal to sacrifice it - the queen and the rook, in the other hand, are so powerful that we can't expose them too much in the middle game, so sometimes we spend more time defending those pieces from bishops and knights than using them for attack... In addition, the pair of bishops together is very strong and they're able to cooperate with the pawns, as they can defend each other.

i don't like each piece for itself, it depends on whats the position, in openings i like bishops, in stratiegic plans i like the knights and queen, and when i'm losing i like unexpected backrank mate with the rooks [(-:]

I prefer pawns. They're usually overlooked, but in the right postition, they can make a huge difference.

Personally, my favorite piece is the king.  It's not the strongest (especially not in the middlegame) but its importance is what makes chess chess.  When you threaten a king, your opponent's only legal moves are to defend against the threat. Thousands of intricate sacrifices and combinations revolve around attacking the opponent's king, or have been stopped by a well timed in-between check.

It's also quite useful during the endgame, where it's as strong/stronger than bishops or knights.
