There must be like 20 topics about this now.

1. h4 is clearly the winning opening since it allows you to bring your rook out early.

Shame on you, you have such a big rating and say such silly things....

Of course 1. a4! is much better.

e4 or d4 are best for beginners - make your stake on the centre. Master these first and then experiment.

E3 is the best, the king can centralize early and lead the assault to the enemy king.

1.f3 is clearly best, opening a line for the king (the most important piece!) while not opening up your other pieces to be attacked.

f3 is only good if followed by g4 as part of a flank attack.

As white I have been playing variations of the Queen's Gambit a lot lately and as black, Petrov's Defense, although these aren't my usual favorites. I'm trying to branch out a bit. I also like to pull out the Orangutan for variety sometimes. You'd be surprised how strong it can be for a wing opening, especially against someone unprepared for it. It has a high shock value, I think. When someone sees you open with 1. b4 they think you're either an idiot or a genius and their disbelief or worry that you played it affects their play. I have a very good record with it in internet play. Cool

ok!  I'll explain this again!

1. d4 is (in my opinion) the better of the two common openings for white.

The Sicilian opening is statistically the best opening for black (of any of the common openings)

The Blackmar-Diemer Gambit is a very successful opening for white, as white brings out super-fast development in exchange for a pawn.

The Queen's Gambit is also extremely successful.  White gains control of the center in exchange for a pawn it will probably win back eventually.

The Catalan is a very even opening (best response to 1. d4 for black, I believe).  However white still holds a slight advantage.  This opening is better for white that the queen's indian defense (as shown in our vote chess games.
