I think playing rated games is good for the purpose of seeing how your progress is coming along. If you are on a losing streak, your rating plummets but if you are getting better you will see your rating go up (obviously). Online ratings are useful but sometimes people take them too seriously.

I only ever play rated games. About a month ago, I satrted only playing against players that are stronger than me. I was finding that I could regularly beat, say 1300 players, inflating my own rating artificially high. I'd rather have a lower rating with a high average opponant rating than the other way around.

 Online. For example, if my rating is 1450, I'll put in an open seek for ratings of 1450-2000. I don't play live chess here (or anywhere for that matter, except at my local club OTB).
