Although white has the initiative(don't confuse this with advantage), his "extra move" can also end up hurting him. One person I played lost a tempo early in the game d3 d5 d4 and as black, I actually became white through transposition.

Except your king and queen were reversed?  :P

I know how to play draughts but not checkers.

What is the difference between draughts and checkers?

I agree with GeoffreyBernardo there. I was always told that draughts and checkers were two names for the same game.

Back on topic, I personally find that White's advantage gained by having the first move increases as the strength of the two players decreases (i.e. White has a pretty good advantage when two pawn-pushers play, but only a minimal one when two grandmasters play)

I don't know if this has been said before, pardon my laziness for not reading the entire thread. I looked up this post because there was a man in a forum somewhere trying to turn white moving first as an advantage into a race argument. It piqued my interest and I came up with this answer. White only has the advantage as the first move if he's the one to checkmate black. Otherwise, in an instance where black checkmates white, the game ends with an even amount of moves and there is not an advantage for either side with the overall victory going to black.

Thanks,

AJ

Hey, I try to win whatever colour I am - and I tend to play each colour 50% of the time. Colour is only a useful reference because we see in degrees of fractured sunlight - don't make it a philosophical argument. If we saw using heat signatures (as in Predator - the moveie?) the chessmen would be at different temperatures. Let's Just enjoy the game! In fact chess should be a means of getting people together. How do you know what race, colour, religion, gender, etc, I am by just seeing my 'code name' across a virtual chessboard? Come on you guys!!

meh if chess is solved then people will still play. people still play checkers, tic tac toe, connect four and many other games that have been solved.

i prefer playing as black, purely because im more comfortable in defence, sitting and waiting to ounce unexpectedly.

its like in a fist fight i supose but you know the other guy is going to punch first, they punch and you can dodge left right backwards or anywhere inbetween. they have to move to counter your defence, even though they moved first.

in my study, i had read in chess book, that white is a birthright of attack! but not problem that reason, because black can steal the attack! it is called COUNTER ATTACK! although first work black player it is his job to defense first.
