Who is your favorite world champion? (Recent & and Old)
I suppose Tal, because he was such a unique talent. On a related issue, it's also interesting to consider who is one's favourite player never to become World Champion. I imagine Korchnoi would get a lot of votes and I like him too. However, I think I've learned quite a bit from the games of Efim Geller. He's one of the few world class grandmasters that a patzer like me can learn something from. Kevin Spraggett wrote an interesting article about him, explaining why, in his opinion, he never became World Champion, despite Botvinnik saying that for a period in the '60s Geller was 'obviously the best player in the world'. Spraggett terms his play 'classical dynamism'; i.e. get hold of the centre, develop the minor pieces quickly, castle as soon as it's safe to do so, etc. In other words, it's all basic stuff, but by looking at his games, weak players (such as myself) can see the ways in which the central principles can be extremely powerful if handled with skill and knowledge.
Mine favorite world champion is :-
Old- Bobby Fischer.
