The pre-Fischer matches were all-Soviet affairs with very small prize funds. Spassky won a couple grand, a new mid-sized car, and a better Moscow apartment for beating Petrosian.
But none of the top players today have been able to command the sponsorship money since Kasaparov retired. Carlsen might attract some money because he has some international celebrity. There wasn't a lot of cash for Kramnik-Leko, Kramnik-Topalov, Anand-Kramnik, or Anand-Topalov either.
The art gallery section where the match is being played is closed to the public, btw. You can buy a ticket. No browsing while you're there, though.

That's pretty lame of the art gallery is should be thier selling points !
Gelfand have to take some risk soon because if they draw all the matches Anand keep his title.
3.7.1.a If the scores are level after the regular twelve (12) games, after a new drawing of colors, four (4) tie-break games shall be played. The games shall be played using the electronic clock starting with 25 minutes for each player with an increment of 10 seconds after each move
3.7.2 If the scores are level after the games in Article 3.7.1a, then, after a new drawing of colors, a match of 2 games shall be played with a time control of 5 minutes plus 3 seconds increment after each move. In case of a level score, another 2-game match will be played to determine a winner. If still there is no winner after 5 such matches (total 10 games), one sudden-death game will be played as described below in Article 3.7.3.
3.7.3 If the score is still level after five matches as described in Article 3.7.2, the players shall play a one sudden death game. The player who wins the drawing of lots may choose the color. The player with the white pieces shall receive 5 minutes, the player with the black pieces shall receive 4 minutes whereupon, after the 60th move, both players shall receive an increment of 3 seconds from move 61. In case of a draw the player with the black pieces is declared the winner.
how much were the Kasparov purses compared to todays purse?
thanks and lol at these rules

The one with the higher IQ will win.
That's a highly intelligent question. How high is yours ?
The one with the 1st big mistake loses :P
Who will win - Anand or Gelfand?
After 40 draws, FIDE president Campomanes will call the match off, and reschedule it.
waffllemaster haha, see post 114.
His out-of-FIDE matches with Short and Anand had purses over $3 million, not sure about the match with Kramnik.
"The player with the white pieces shall receive 5 minutes, the player with the black pieces shall receive 4 minutes "
Typo? Must be the other way around. If not then what is p with the choosing after the lot? I'll choose black- no wait! white. hmm..
No, Black wins if he holds a draw. The old rules were 6/5, but it was decided Black had too much of an edge.
With Gelfand as white today I predict that the chances today's game will have a winner is 0% :-)
Topalov, Where art thou? Carlsen, Where art thou? Annand and Gelfland, two very smart, goodwilling but way too carefull men are not giving us a match to watch and love.
No attacking, but only safe exchanges. No sacrifices, but non-comittal moves. Computer preparation is very interesting in itself, but it is no fun to watch. Chess deserves an exiting World Championship. 2013, Topalov - Carlsen, please.
The Topalov of yore is no more. He's just a tourist now.
i think anand will win

don't have to claim atleast amid speculations, for certaint among both of us who amassed a higher rate. then you guess who?
Of course we have to speculate, as long as somebody shuns the REAL (FischeRandom) chess.
