I see that so many players' ratings on chess.com are MUCH lower from their highest by many hundred points. I know for a fact that one of my friends is like 1100 down from his very peak.

look at giorno for exmaple. he's a bullet legend and has a peak of 2800 something but now he's stuck around the 2300s or something around and can't get back near it. titled people? FM adriendemuth, another absolutely amazing bullet player, is like 600 down (2400-3000).

If your friend is down 1100 from his peak, why don't you ask him?

When live chess first started everyone started at 1200, and everyones rating was super unstable.  Thats how a lot of people got to a really high peak before everything settled down.  Also not as many really strong players played live chess when it first started, so a strong player at the time could get to a much higher rating with easier competition.

IMO, chess4001, the players you mention are rated so high that a 2800 (max) bullet player that is now 2300 doesn't seem like much to me. I immediately think of the competition (stiff) and the fact that life gets in the way of studying and analyzying chess.

A max rating is simply that-the highest the player has ever been. It doesn't necessarially mean the player will be there all the time.

Since you have a U.S. flag next to your name, I will present this comparison. There are a number of baseball players batting .400 right now. In 4 months, how many do you think will be there?

Remember the number itself means nothing, it's relative to the pool of players.  Right now, 2300s - 2400s is the ceiling no matter how good you are.

But if a titled player made a new account and started playing.  Let's say they didn't care who they played and so got 50 wins before meeting someone who could actually give them a game.  When you're new your rating goes up by a lot, so that makes sense for titled players IMO.

Other people, I dunno, either they were cheating to inflate it or sandbagging to deflate it because 1000 is obviously alot.
