Why do some people don't like chess and even kids?

Where I live in Puerto Rico, kids says that chess is for old people, that's not true, chess is for all ages, and some people says that they don't like chess and they say it before playing it they would have play it and then say if they like it or not.

I am 12 years old and I love chess and other board games. Smile

The world would be a pretty boring place if everyone liked the same things.

Yes that is true, because if everyone liked the same maybe it wouldn't exist anything but chess.

Many folks don't like losing, and you have to lose to learn in chess!

Here it is viewed as too academic i.e. "nerdy." Like it or not, an interest in academic things tends to be looked down on as nerdy by the masses, especially children.

If this is true I must be learning an awful lot.

So, that's why I am good at chess, at first I lose many games, and by losing I am learning and now I am good at chess.

Exacly! How come that after I tell somebody about exciting 34-moves tournament game (OTB) which lasted just 2.5 hours, they think chess is boring?!

I'm with you King45, that it's exactly right, they say that chess is borring when they even don't see or play chess, not even 1 time!

A lot of people take too long to play a game.  I learned to like chess a lot more once I started playing with a clock.  Then you and your partner can make mistakes—that's the fun part!

Yeah, I love it with the clock! Thanks to clocks my longest game ever laster for just over 6hours! I also played some other games for more than 5 hours, but when I tell a friend about these games he thinks it's boring, and somehow i can't blame him because I know how it looks to the un-initiated masses.

But one think I'm not sure about: should we really complain that some peopel find it boring? No doubt that if chess was more apreciated then we would have GM tournaments like tennis masters series or the Superbowl, and more girls who would find chess players way sexier than varsity football players =P. But yet, it is really annoying when people who know little about something try to brag about it. It's way it may be for the best that many people think badly of chess so we chess players stay different, isolated from the masses by intelectual barriers. Man, don't you believe chess players are part of an elite society of intelectualy superior beings? Dream on pals...

I would say people say chess is boring is the fact that they don't want to learn something that they will find themselves playing when they are OLD. :-)

no offense... and this is sort of a joking type of post

some people don't want to play it because they think it is nerdy. but I take pride in the n-word (that would be nerd)

Yeah... I believe alot of people find it boring because they actually have to think Yell And that's not something alot of people find fun. So, to them, sitting down for about 5 hours thinking isn't what they call exciting, but watching people run around with balls or trying to hit something back over a net (which I find rather pointless, other than the excersise).... yeah...aparently that's exciting.

And, yes, alot of people don't like to be called nerds. However, my friends and I take it as a complement ^^ Nerds are so fun to hang with.

Anyways, commenting on woodstock, I'd much rather prefer a chess player to a football player.

I like watching people "running around with balls". Many sports like football, soccer, volleyball require some use of strategy. And they are fun to watch! Especially soccer...

And, yeah, exercising is very important thing, ESPECIALLY for chess-players.

I agree but much worst is playing golf.... You hit the ball hard and try to follow wherever it goes....lol on the other hand employs concentration and a lot of exercise.
