WHAT IS IT THAT PEOPLE ENJOY ABOUT CHESS?

I LOVE THE FACT THAT IT USES YOUR BRAIN AND MAKES YOU THINK ALOT ABOUT SOLVING PROBLEMS, AND I AM ADDICTED.

LET ME KNOW YOUR VIEWS ON THIS

It has been said that "chess is war." Without question it is certainly mental combat. The mental challenge is what I like most about the game. Then there is also the seemingly infinite variety of moves. It's a marvelous game which I find to be rather addicting.

I like it because it's the only game they let me play in prison. My cell mate ate the checkers.Tongue out

It helps me to unwind and to concentrait on other things. And I learn from every game I play. It gives me the chance to make friends from all over the world and learn about new cultures.

Chess is more then a game it is an art, and we are artists painting a masterpiece. Really though chess for me is and has been for sometime now more then a game. I love studying the game, studying my opponents. It is a life long quest to be better at something then someone else, and everyone wants to be better then someone. "Chess is an organized island in a world of chaos." - A chess website a friend gave me.

It is concrete, logical, understandable, unlike real life. When emotion and human relationships get me down there's refuge in chess.

Just a little correction, the game of GO (Baduk, wéiqí), is much older then Chess according to historians.

"Chess originated in India, where its early form in the 6th century was chaturanga, which translates as "four divisions of the military" – infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots, represented respectively by pawn, knight, bishop, and rook. In Persia around 600 the name became shatranj and the rules were developed further."

".....the current form of the game emerged in Southern Europe during the second half of the 15th century after evolving from similar, much older games of Indian and Persian origin."

"Go originated in China, where it has been played for at least two thousand years. It is mostly popular in East Asia but has in recent years gained some popularity in the rest of the world as well. Go is noted for being rich in strategic complexity despite its simple rules."

"The earliest written reference of the game is usually taken to be the historical annal Zuo Zhuan (c. 4th century BC), referring to a historical event of 548 BC."
