Its coming out mid-January next year I believe. I have experience with console chess, and they are pretty decent. It will be kinda hard to move though. I find Online Chess Kingdoms for PSP the most interesting, since there is real time mode that will give good chess players a challenge.

This may not be available in the U.S.

It's supposed to sell for 30 euros when it releases in Jan 2008.  Speculation is that it will be able to play over the internet and have several choices for pieces and boards including Mario type pieces. Don't know if it will have any training/lesson features.

I am not so interested... It doesn't sound like a big deal... I don't think it can be good as real (or as internet game)

I will say that is rather pointless, because unlike Wii sport or other game, Wii chess doesn't really make a difference since you don't really need to stand up and swing your arm crazy to play real chess = ) (unless you are allow to beat up your enemy...which is not a good idea)

Yeah, although it sounds like an interesting idea, I would think that Chess would be the antithesis of what the Wii was made for.  But who knows?  Maybe therein lies the challenge:  create a game that on the surface might not be the best match for the Wii but how to make it exciting, with more motion interaction?  Here is a link with a video and more info.

I just posted some info about it at a game site I help out with:

Wii Chess News

 And a video:

Wii Chess Video

I have been unable to find any information about a US release, but I find it hard to believe that it won't eventually make its way to the States.  It might show up as a direct download via Wii's network.

(1) Given the quality of Chessmaster for Nintendo DS, which sucked, I'd have low expectation regarding chess for another videogame console.

(2) If you are hooked up to the internet, you can play chess online for free, why do you need a Wii?

(3) Videogame controllers are a lousy way of interacting with chess. Stylus (for handhelds) or mouse makes a lot more sense.

Yeah, but you got to realize that chess on game consoles is not meant for the hardcore crowd, but for those just getting their toes wet in the world of chess.  Wii Chess and Chessmaster DS are just chess propaganda pieces for the younger crowd. Smile  Hopefully, after they've played a few hours of these 'lite' chess programs, they will get hooked and join us here.

The DS is a real computer, a more powerful computer than my desktop PC from 14 years ago. I anticipated a real chess program. But I was disappointed.

I bought it recently. I had a hard time with the different chessboard you can choose from. Different collors, pieces, 3d which I changed emmidiatly after the first move. I though I was getting a headache. I finally found one that is decent.

After level 4 (10 is highest) it became harder to beat it, could say something about me being bad at chess but I think I a bit better of myself ;)

You can save games anytime you like and review it later. And in the review you can start playing anywhere in the game. I only miss a feature where you can setup chessproblems or positions from old games. I haven't tried playing online. But from what I read you have two time options. A 5 min game and a 20 min game. And you can play against someone with 2 remotes. But then a real board and pieces would be better to play a game in my opinion, although if you like hanging on the couch :)

I'm sure that moving the pieces with the remote would result in many accidental moves of pieces onto the wrong square.
