Hi,

I've recently fallen back into playing chess regularly, after a long hiatus; now I'm interested in following the worlds best as they compete against each other. What I would like to know is, how do players get to play in the world championship match?

I've recently read "Bobby Fischer Goes to War", and the structure at the time (1972) was: Regional Championship -> Interzonal -> Candidates -> World Championship Match; is it still the same structure today?

Thanks for reading!

FIDE chooses players seemingly at random to play for the title.

You can start your investigation here. The latest boondoggle.
