In 93 when Kasparov and Short broke away from Fide and formed the PCA, other World Champions wore the FIDE crown in Kaspys absence. If there had been no PCA, would any of the FIDE world Champs took the title off Kasparov?

their chances would have been narrow, as Kasparov's elo rating continued to soar right up to 2851!

Topalov would beat him, and has.

I presume that the OP is referring to play in a match?

True, but Kasparov lost to Kramnik only months after reaching that 2851.

I'd say Anand and Topalov have the best chances, but another Kasparov-Karpov match would have been a possibility in 1996 (or maybe even 1999).

Kasparov's too involved in politics at the time during his last professional game against Topalov.  It was also highly emotional for Garry to play under too much pressure knowing his career has come to an end.  He played well during that Linares tournament, with only Topalov inflicting his only loss, but I saw that game, in ended in a favorable position for Veselin in the pawn ending.  If you watch that video you'll see Garry coming to and fro, not really putting 100% effort, while Topalov would just sit there and stay focused.  Topalov later outranked Kasparov (2812) as the highest rated player with 2813.

Their professional record, as of 1994 thru 2005:

Kasparov = 21.0 points

Topalov = 10.0 points

Kramnik's rating at the time, if I'm not mistaken, was around 2804, when he took on the 2851 Kasparov.  Kramnik would later leave Kasparov winless in their 2000 WCC.

hehe, it's ironic to see Kasparov lost to Karpov in their 2002 New York x3d rapid match.  Kasparov 2838, Karpov 2688 elo.  Too much politics?  I believe.

from 1993 to 2005, Kasparov(2851) = 3.5 pts. , Khalifman(2698) = 2.5 pts. hmm, too close.
