Why is there a red asterisk after Notes in the chess game?

If you have a red astrisk, that means that there are Notes in the note area.  You will notice that if that area is blank, there are no notes.  Now, you don't have to click on that tab every time to see if you did or did not have notes in that area - -the red astrisk will be there if in fact that area does contain notes.
