Hello.

I used to be able to insert games into my blog posts, comments, news items, etc., but now, I cannot. Is there something wrong with my procedure? When I am editing a post or a comment, I do this:

- Click "Insert position or game"
- Select "Game or sequence of moves"
- Click "Continue"
- Select "Use a FEN string"
- Copy and paste the FEN string from the game I want
- Click "Continue"

....and then it says, "You can edit the diagram to the left by dragging pieces on and off the board and selecting other options below." This is not a game, it's simply an image. In fact, if I click "Enter moves," the move controls will not work. I cannot click through the game, as per usual.

What is going on here? Thank you for any help you can provide.

FEN is used to store only a particular position in a game. You want to use the PGN which contains the entire chessgame.

Still works for me....

Anthony, yes, FEN is for positions, but you can start with a position and play moves from there.

When you say "I cannot click through the games as usual", is that after you have tried to move the pieces like you want? After clicking enter moves, you have to play the moves out, it will not just have something already there.

FEN String gets you to a certain position, then you have to enter the moves from there. If you want it so you can click through the moves, then you need a PGN. Does this answer your question?

Short:

PGN = whole game

FEN = from position whitout previous moves

Beautiful beautiful beautiful. Thank you all so much for your help. I didn't know that there was a difference between FEN and PGN.

Take heart!

you can also use pgn and select a starting position, so that people don't have to clickity click to catch up to the move you're talking about...

I've never used FEN.  I guess you could say I'm against FENinists.  But I also believe in God, so I'm not really a PGNist either..  I'm an enigma (but not Enigmata!)
