Somehow, my background has been set to dark grey. It makes it almost impossible to read much of the text in black. How do I change it back to white?

Go to your profile name in the top right corner and there should be a thingy that says background on the right window/toolbar thingy...if you can't see it (because of your new background) it is the first one under the "UPGRADE" button...or...you might not have that button because you are a diamond member...in that case, it would be under the HOME button.
Thanks for the reply. I was unable to find anything that said "background" but I did find a way to change my theme so that it is now legible. However, I think something has been corrupted on this computer. I do not have the same problem when I logon using a different computer. I also have the same problem when I logon using my son's profile on this computer. Is there a way to reinitialize or redownload whatever is on this computer?
I don't know, but it may be whatever browser you use. I don't think that Internet Explorer is compatible with this site, but...hey! I don't use IE!
I use Internet Explorer on both my computers and it has worked fine up until now. I have found a work around that works by choosing a different theme, but I am curious about what is going on with this computer. It does not affect any sites other than chess.com

If you haven't already, try to clear your internet cache on the computer that you're experiencing problems with. That may solve the problem (site updates and old cache files sometimes cause these things).

I've been having the same problem over the past week. Chess.com did something to change their overall theme. The entire site is messed up now. And the statement that IE is not supported may or may not be true, but if it is true, chess.com will lose 70% of their customers so I would have to assume that it's just a major bug right now.

We've had quite a few reports of the main site background being a dark grey color by members using Internet Explorer and we found this is a Compatibility issue and can changed by adjusting your IE settings.
If you open Internet explorer and then go to www.chess.com
For IE version 7 - click on 'Page' then make sure 'compatibility view' is checked
For IE version 8 - Click on Page, then Off Compability View.
For IE version 9 - Click on the Compatibility View icon in the URL bar (it looks like a page ripped in half) When it changes to a solid color, the page is recognized and you won't have to tell the computer to look for the compatibility view again.
Thanks for the feedback, however, this solution did not help me. I added chess.com to compatibility view and had the same problem when I switched back to the default theme. I have solved the problem by using the "Classic Chess.com Theme". That one works for me.
