on 27 April, hundreds of tornadoes hit my state. Over 300 people died. We had no electricity for 6 days. When I finally got back on chess.com, my account was closed. Chess.com re-opened it, but I had been removed from all tournaments and resigned from all tournament games. My rating dropped from 2200+ to 1900. I have over 2 months of vacation time. They were not no-vacation tournaments. Chess.com won't fix it. I ask you: Is that right?
If they absolutely can't do anything, then so be it. But how hard can it be to reinstate those games, even manually?
I am. Apparently, I have no choice. But how hard can it be to reinstate those games? It's not like it's a huge deal; this is a hobby and a leisure activity after all, but still, I do pay for this as so many of us do.
I cannot follow you. If you have vacation time your games would be paused regardless of the reason why you did not make a move. Even stranger why would your account be closed? Someone needs to fill in a bit more info before it makes sense to comment.
The Chess.com meteorologists really dropped the ball here. I guess Chess.com can create all kinds of storms, but just can't stop any. Other chess sites at least offer insurance.
Mike - I agree with you! I'm going to ask why this happened and figure out why you were not handled with more care. My apologies while I look into it...
Wow! Chess.com helps storm victims, and revolutionaries?!
Thank you very, very much for anything you can do.
i have no idea why my account was closed. I was repeatedly told that _I_ closed it, which is preposterous. Then I was told that someone who had access to my computer must have closed it. No one had access to my computer, not even me; I had no power. I was at the computer when the power went off and I was home alone when the power came back on.
When an account is closed, the account holder is automatically removed from all tournaments and all those tournament games are automatically resigned, it does not matter how much vacation time the account holder has. I was also told that nothing at all could be done about all those tournament games. Perhaps that is true, but that makes no sense to me. How hard can it be?
Mike; it's payback. Your just riding the Kharma train. You must've really pissed someone off somewhere/somehow. Is your middle name Earl? ("My name is Earl" - TV show).
I think I understand a little, though. You're just looking for an answer as to why/how this could've happened. That, and with everything else, I could imagine I'd be just a little upset, too.
Your logic makes perfect sense. Also, I KNOW that they can go back and find out EXACTLY when the account was closed (if that's truly the case). They can also find out where the request originated (if their routers are setup up to do so, or they have IDS setup on their F/E).
I do (however much it pains me to say so) agree with BorgQueen, in that it would be quite difficult to re-instate your games, as the implications of doing so would have exponential ramifications. Could it be done? Yes, but it would take a computer a while to get every single aspect of the scope to be reversed. Manually, it would be a Herculean feat, near to impossible. Even getting it done digitally would still be quite a job, as they would have to figure out how to code each task that they'd need to undo for each game you played, then every game that each one of your opponents has played since that point in time. It be like planning the Apollo 11 mission all over again. The cost analysis in man-hours just doesn't justify it.
However, if it were me, and I was involved in the decision-making process of the #1 chess site in the world, I'd comp you for your next year's subscription, at the same level you are currently at. Ya, that's the ticket!
So, bro, if you need to vent some more, and I mean really say how you feel, send me a message. I'll listen to ya', and do what I can to be a sounding board.
JimEBAu- wow, that post was kinda douchey. It's Karma that his state got inhilated?
You're comparing the NASA Apollo program with undoing a few logs and maybe changing a script or two...
Ah, Mike, it's such a burden to bear to be so misunderstood...
@knightdropFTW - the kharma line was a personal line for Mike relating to his account being closed. It was in no way referencing what happened in Alabama.
Also, you should re-read my big paragraph. Have you looked at the algorythm for ratings using the glecko system? It's like 12 pages long, and extremely complex. Each game played, by Mike and each one of his opponents, would have to be taken into consideration. Then, each game that every one of the opponents played against someone else would have to taken into consideration, and so on. Also, were they regular games, T/M's, or tourney games? I'm hitting this at a high level. Once you go granular; forget it.
In fact, I've got $20, right now, that says they won't be able to re-instate his games (that's all I can afford to lose, in case I'm wrong). It'd be nice, but it aint gonna' happen. Too many ramifications, on an exponential level, to get it done. It'd be like changing history. The only way to do it would be to actually go back in time, at that moment, and prevent whatever happened from happening.
BTW, I don't douche. I will, however, for a small fee, help you extricate your head from between your legs.
Any good enginner, hardware or software, appreciates end user feedback, particularly if it uncovers an unexpected failure mode. It helps them improve their product. No product is perfect and however much testing is done before fielding, every failure mode can never be anticipated during design or uncovered during testing. If it's not ecomonicaly feasable to implement a change, fine. If nothing else, it's worth looking into. No succesful company wants unexplained failures in their products.
Erik's quick, apologetic, reassuring response, that's the way to go per Deming/Juran/TQM.
i don't know software, but I do know good Engineering Quality and Reliability principles. They apply to software just as much as they apply to hardware.
I think if you just give him a month of free diamond membership then he will be reimbursed.
