In the tournament section, can there be clear links next to each tournament game entry that says either 'Click here to enter tournament' if it hasn't yet started, or, 'Tournament is closed' if the tournament has already started; or something like this.  This would avoid alot of the confusion that has evidently been conveyed in various posts.

If the tournament has "not" already started, it appears under the heading of

"upcoming" .. it also shows how many players are required, and how many have so far joined .. for example  4/7  (4 people have signed up, 3 more needed)

When a tourament is closed, it then appears under the heading of "Current".
