I just lost 40 rating points in my last game. I was 1351, and I am now 1311. The player I was playing with was 1190. I have 170 games played. Is this normal? I have never suffered such a big rating difference after a game before.

If your opponent was ranked that low, then yeah, that is probably about right.

yes, since you played a player with a lower rating thanb you. if you play someone with about the same rating, or a higher rating, you will not go down as much.

Yes, I understand, but I have already played versus other low rated players and high rated players, and the difference have never been so huge. Maybe have been like 25 or something, but never 40!

Well, in the Glicko Rating System, your rating also depends on how many games your opponent has played.  So look at how many games your opponent has played and see if that makes any sense as to why you lost 40 rating points.

Also, with Glicko, the amout of time that has past since your last game will also effect your rating. The longer it has been since you last finished a game, the more your rating will be effected by a single game.

He have less than 30 games played! Having I played 170 games, shouldn't I lose less than what he wins?

 Tiago,

I just took a look at both yours and his histories. Before that game you had only finished 6 games in May. He has finished MANY more. Total number of games has a lot less meaning than recent games. The number of recent games is the single biggest factor in determining your Glicko RD. Your Glicko RD is one of the biggest factor in determining how much your rating goes up or down with each finished game. So, to answer your question directly, based on your respective RDs, no, you shouldnt lose less than he wins, because he has finished more games recently.

 Hope that helps,

 Josh
