Hello all can i abort a game that has not started yet  even if he challenged  and i accepted?

    will i loose points ?

my opponent has a"(unrated }'" besides his name (i think the system forced that on him , thats what the faq says and i would not like to play with a person that ababdons lot of games) still when i looked  for points detail  it says ill loose points if i loose.

i am confused why should i loose points for a unrated game ?

    please help

If you resign you lose hence you lose rating points.

If you abort (cancel) it doesn't lose you points

aborting is the same as cancelling. If no moves have been played then the game has yet to start

I'm not sure the game would be unrated, and if it is you shouldn't gain or lose any points. The "details" tab will tell you if the game is rated.

Yes but whether rated or not if he just aborts the game then there is no rating difference

If you would lose points then you have an unrated opponent not an unrated game. Previously you had to search to find out if someone close to 1200 was new to the site and had an unreliable rating. Unrated indicates your opponent's strength is between GM and complete patzer. The 1200 is still there just hidden.

Unrated has nothing to do with abandoning games. Someone who abandons games has a high timeout ratio.

Thats the problem my details pad say its rated but his name has a tag shown unrated (i think he was porced by the system)

are u official on the help team ?

The fellow is playing a move or 2 then abandon games i loked into his games

No, I'm just a nosy bystander. I believe I'm right, but you shouldn't rely absolutely on my input.

I totally understand your concern since it does seem that there is some sort of imbalance here. How could your opponent remain unrated after he's "abandoned" his games after a few moves. It seems like his rating should start dropping below 1200.

The staff rely on members to help members in the forums.

Ratings approximate your playing strength and will get to where they should be. If you become underrated you will soon return to your assigned place.

    http://support.chess.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/19/0/the-game-ended-and-my-rating-didnt-change-at-all-why

"Abort - No effect on ratings"

Edit: Just realized I made an off-hand remark that could be misconstrued to be insulting.

    Thanks tad

    ill check it out.

I am a member also trying to help others ,but i always am afraid that i may make a mistake and someone else will suffer and loose points .

if an official  staff member makes a mistake it can be repaired .

anyway i still cant understand how a unrated member overide my settings.

i have a min 1500 and he his not added to my friends .

The rating is there otherwise opponents could not get a recalculated rating. View it in his game archive.

For instance this player would display unrated ...

    http://www.chess.com/echess/players.html?name=toadonroad&country=&min_rating=&max_rating=

     toadonroad unrated 1 (33%) 2 (67%) 0 (0%) 5 months ago Challenge!

... but is actually rated 1249

    http://www.chess.com/echess/profile/toadonroad

     toadonroad (1249)  redheadedsaints (1411) 0-1 (lost) 39 22 May 2011 view

So someone could display "unrated" when their rating is over 1500.

Aborting games will not count against your rating, regardless as to whether or not the player is "rated" or "unrated".  You can only abort a game, if you have yet to make a move.

A player will show as "unrated" if they have played more unrated games than rated games.  Even if that player has 9000 rated games, if they have 9001 unrated games, they will show as "unrated".

Resigning against an "unrated" player WILL affect your rating in a rated gamed.  Aborting WILL NOT affect your rating.

I hope that clears up some of the confusion.

Thanks tad.. and finity  confusing but i understand what the system does.

i looked in to his ratings he has an average of  1384 so how should i understand this figure ? how did he pass my min setup for 1500 ?

next if i abort i can be considered as a negative person ,and do wrong to my record ...right.

    Please provide these details.

1 - Name of opponent. This is allowed except in a "name and shame" situation, which this is not. Copy and paste to avoid typos.

2 - Type of game. Online Standard, online Chess960, live Blitz, live Bullet or live Standard.
