Good question - I had to search around to find the answer. Best explained with a picture....

Hover over 'Home' & click on Profile & you'll be taken to your 'Edit Profile' page - then you should be able to see your existing avatar. Click on Choose File & it should open a browse (files/folders) window so that you can select a file from your PC.

I've only ever uploaded one avatar but I imagine this is much the same. The instructions are pretty self-explanatory but you should ensure your image is about 200 pixels square (as it states). I reduced my one using Paint - there's a function in the latest version to reduce the pixel size of any image !

I have your problem too. Even I wrote a question in my profile which you had seen it. I think I know what is the problem. The problem would be due to the short course of the omitting of the advertisements. It would distort the settings. Now I don't recognize how to bring back the advertisements!
