I looked up your profile before answering this question. You are only 13 years old, so do enjoy chatting with people whilst playing, (there are some really great people on this site), plus join in the forums, but a WORD OF WARNING. Never give away too much information about yourself. NEVER give out your real name, NEVER give out your address or phone number. NEVER give out the name of your school. NEVER, NEVER agree to met someone you've met on site without your parents knowledge and full consent. (They must be involved). Stay safe, and enjoy Chess.Com its a great place to be.

caro_carson: go to your sister's chess.com user page

http://www.chess.com/members/view/yoursistersusername

Then find the "Actions" box on that page, at the right. Click on "Add to my friends list."

Good advice, Queenie, for any internet activity a young or otherwise vulnerable person to heed. I used to be a private detective and saw some very bad things happen to naive people, young and old. I shudder at the personal information my young nieces and nephews reveal on their social network web sights. We all think we're bullet-proof when we're young and just foolish when we get old. None of us are above it, though, I believe.

Good point OldCrusader. However, you've already given away your employment status, your previous occupation, your hometown, your date of birth, and one of your hobbies.

Why shouldn't he? I mean, sure, there are predators in this world. But there are also really beautiful souls out there, and maybe just that information about my hobby or date of birth is going to connect me with someone who has great potential to enrich my life. I am not saying it is wrong to say a word of caution to kids, but they should also be taught to recognize friendships that are precious.

I have no expectation of privacy on the Internet. But, neither am I naive nor vulnerable -- except to better chess players -- inspite of my age. Still, I suppose I can be had. Thanks for reminding me, MyCowsCanFly. Arrogance goes before getting clobbered.

And following the homepage link: His wife's name; the identities of a 139 of his associates; Anniversary date (33 years! Go Mike); Another hobby (The mission in New Mexico is pretty nice) and a bunch of other stuff, which I feel like not going into, as your privacy has been breached severely enough.

It's probable that you won't be a victim of a predator, but even so, identity thefts for example are a growing criminal industry, and adjusting those privacy settings so that only your friends can see you might not be a bad idea.

If a person wants to be your friend, and you don't want them to be your friend. Click [or touch, if you have an ipod touch] on their name, and press block member. Then, if he or she wants to be his or her friend, it won't show up. you can do the same thing if a random person gives you a text.

                                              Hope this has helped!

That is your brilliant contribution to this forum?  You have a nice game of chess with someone, a nice conversation, they send you a friend request, so you block them?!?  Way to make the world a friendlier place.  Unbelievable.
