Losing points to potential superstars

Hello Help and Support.

I am currently playing in a LIVE Tournament and have been paired with an opponent  MyBabeLuvsMe [0.0] vs. Singhnikhil [0.0] (15 10 rated) (win: 1, draw: -7, loss: -16)not yet rated in Standard Chess.

My concern is that if i lose i drop a huge 16 points even though this opponent MAY be a 2000+ player eventually!

This is a bug in the rating system?

It's not a bug. There's no way of knowing.

Another point being, i join a 1500+ tournament and end up playing 1200 unrated a LOT of the time (:

This is a site system difficulty , unresolved so far....some Directors exclude unrated players,others simply don't bother. Look for competitions where  the qualifying conditions include a   minimum number of games played for eligibility  to join. This helps to avoid some of the  mainly merely Empire Builders whom you will come to recognise in time.
