I was at this site's 'sitemap' page and clicked the link provided for starting an online 960 game.
The site set me up with a regular chess game instead, which of course I aborted.
How may I initiate a 960 online game here?
You start an online chess960 game the same way as with a regular "Online" game. You have the "Start a new game...
From that menu, choose "game options I select," this will open up several more menus. The first pull down menu after it has a default of "Standard Chess." That one can be changed to "Chess 960." Other options can be chosen as usual (time per move, rated/unrated, color choice, etc).
OK, I'll ignore the faulty link in the sitemap.
Where do I see/access "menu"?
All I'm seeing is in "my online chess" area:
- play your first game with a chesscom greeter
- or, click here to create an open challenge
And I note a 'start new game' with a time limit offering, but the game type (regular vs 960) is not offered as an option.
Ok. All the way from the beginning. In the top right corner of every page, you have the "My Home" menu. Mousing over that brings up many menu options, the first of which is "Online chess." Click there.
On the page that loads, you will see several options near the top of the page:
"Play LIVE chess" with a hand grabbing a pawn.
"Start a New Game" with a blank chessboard and two people
"Join a Tournament" with a trophy
"Chess Videos" with a monitor with the standard "play" icon on it
"Chess Mentor" with a stylized black knight on a half white/half black background
"Tactics Trainer" with a blank chessboard with a green "?" in the corner
Of these, click on "Start a New Game," this will take you to the page I had referenced before, where there are two pull-down menus. The first one probably has "the usual game options" as default. This is the one that you change to "game options I select." The second pull-down menu determines whether you want a random opponent or a specific one.
Assuming I am understanding the page you mention correctly, clicking on the "create an open challenge" should bring you to the same page. I don't believe there are any restrictions towards starting a 960 game, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. I may simply be unaware of them.

For me, it simply places a Seek Ad for online games (which led rapidly to someone accepting it for a normal chess game which I again promptly aborted -- I'm starting to worry about getting a reputation for aborting).
There were not two pull-down menus. Along with the "Start a New Game" link, there was provision for selecting move duration (3-days seems to be the default) and a rating range (900-1500 is offered as a default). NO other options or links leading to other options appear to be available.
Now, maybe 960's only available to Premium members (I suspect not -- some of your opponents if you play it, have not been premium members, correct?), or, perhaps your layout as a premium member's very different for mine as a free range member. I thank you for your attempts at assistance.
I'm hoping a free range member such as myself will offer some help.
I haven't really played 960 since it first came out quite some time ago. There may be a "minimum # of games" provision that I don't know about to let you choose from more options. It may also be a difference between free/premium members that, again, I simply don't know about. A quick look through the FAQs doesn't seem to offer any further insight on the matter one way or another.
"Search" is finally working on this site, and I was able to find the answer (amongst assorted older topics, some with 'dead' links but one contained the following key link within a post that gets me to a 'menu' where I can end up with 960 online, along with assorted options).
That was HARD to find. So, I gotta wonder, if anyone else knows about it:
ps. Posting this link on my profile so I won't have to hunt for it in future.
pps. I've started my first 960 game -- please, tell me if it is rated or unrated (there's no indication).
Anyone? My clock's running and I'd dislike aborting my 3rd attempt at a 960 game sufficiently that I'd probably give up on trying to play that here.
Quoting this to point out that I didn't see the changes until you'd posted this. I don't think that the fact that there are edits to existing posts give "alerts."
I took a quick look at your 960 game against rob6069. It is Rated. This should show up on the "Details" tab:
Thanks, it worked for me.
