Rating on challenges graph

Every week a new puzzle in trying to understand how chess.com works. This week it's: Rating on challenges graph.

Last night I played a game with a member based upon his rating as displayed on the challenges graph. When I put my mouse over his "dot" it shows, as you know, his user name and rating. OK. This member's rating as shown on the challenges graph was 1200. So far so good...

Later, after finishing the game, I went to my games archive to replay the game. I was surprised to see that my opponent in that game was rated not 1200 but ca. 1357! Why this difference?

This was a standard live game and the opponent's dot was in that section (the one on the far right hand side).

Obviously if the challenges graph rating does not reflect the member's actual rating, the system is not working, is it?

The archive shows the ratings as they were after the game. Your opponent was 1200 before the game and after he beat you it jumped to 1357.

Now, how on Earth can he jump 157 points after beating me? I was 1182 for gosh sakes!

It was his first game at that time control. Everyone starts at 1200 and ratings jump a lot in the first few games.
