Tournament Lid. I recently entered a tournament that was limited to players between 1200 and 1400. But  I have come to find out there are several players over the limit with well established ratings. This seems silly whats the glory of winning and whats the point of a 1200 playing against a 1489.

There must be a reasonable explanation.

Anyone?

Those players should be able to go to the tournament but they shouldn't have been able to participate- that is against USCF regulation. 1489 isn't lightyears away from 1200, but it's the principal of it that counts. Maybe you should contact USCF because you may have unfairly got your rating lowered in a game with a player over 1400.

RLN - i understand your concern - this has been discussed in other threads before - those players were within the appropiate ratings when they entered the tournament - they have simply won some games that have boosted their rating since - there is nothing wrong with that - people certainly shouldn't be expected to stop playing other games simply because they have entered a tournament - if you look more closely, you will also see some players with LESS than 1200 rating for having lost some games since the tournament started

Thought you meant USCF tournaments as I've heard that this happens quite a bit.

RLN,my friend i believe the chess game at hand or even my next best move should be the focus of our attention. The ratings are based on a series of games, good games ,smart games rushed games and poorly thought out games. But the game at hand is the prize, the competition, the challenge and the test of my progress or decline. To get better we must play better players than ourselves as you have told me.
