I just found this thing called trophy showcase on my profile (which isn't exactly a great endorsement for my powers of observation). What is a trophy, and how do I get one?

Seems like it's a new feature. You can award them to your opponent after a game has ended. Check it out by viewing a game that you've already completed.

i just got one, given by my opponent. Didn't think he'll give me but he did. after each game you can choose to give your opponent a trophy. What i don't know if you can give tropy anytime to a friend, because i just saw a give tropy beside tropy details if not mistaken.

i don't see any bad reason to give someone a trophy after loosing from a good game. I see it as an encouragement for players specially beginners to play more seriously, while having fun at the same time. Moreover it also promotes sportsmanship.

we are going ot add more and more types of trophies over the coming days/weeks/months :) should just get more and more fun!
