I do know that losing to someone with a lower score than you drops your own score a lot more than if you lose to someone higher. Beating someone higher than you gives you heaps more points. I think it's possible to get heaps of points by only playing those lower than you and always winning (if possible).

well it doesn't always accumulate quickly, when my rating was 1300 i would only get a +1 beating a 900. they design the system so that it's way more practical to seek challenges with people above or at your level/rating
