87.5 is between 120 and 60. Precisely, it's halfway between 85 and 90.
It is "obviously" useless only because you are under the impression that 1/2 is a better fraction than 87.5/120. It is by no way a rational thing.
The whole 87.5s stuff is about making you realize that there will always be gaps to be filled between existing time controls, so why not stop at the minute, but apparently your head is pretty thick.
That is sad. 90 seconds is not 87,5, it is half way between 1 and 2 minutes and stops the "time players" from checking you in the last 5 seconds.
