Well even after the newest update I seem to be having problems staying online in live chess.. I was hoping after the new Java update, the new version of live chess, and a fully updated Firefox, I was hopeful that there would be some improvement.
I was wondering if it was possible that an opponent can cause a disconnect? I seem to always disconnect when I am in a winning position. It always seems to be a good thing for my opponent that I get disconnected.
Have you thought about not allowing a points increase due to disconnections? Might be the right thing to do until this disconnection problem gets fixed..
2 cents...
I believe it has a disclaimer on it that emphasizes the fact that it is a BETA and will not always work. The Java update has little to do with it, it is all about your browser (IE, Firefox, etc.) and the chess.com servers.
we will readjust ratings after we fix all live chess bugs.
I don't know if that is even necessary erik... and gee whiz chessbee I see the disclaimer everytime I log into live chess. Easy on the rhetoric there... Like I said I was hoping...
I thought the interface was java based but I guess not... thanks for the clue chessbee. In case you did not notice I am trying to keep everything current to help diagnose.
erik... have you run across anyone intentionally trying to crash or time out an opponent i.e. to specifically get them to disconnect? Is that even possible? honestly, I would not even worry about fixing ratings. I just thought it would be useful to not allow rating changes for disconnects.
thanks for the quick response erik...
the trouble with not changing ratings after disconnects is... suddenly everyone losing disconnects :)
there is nothing somebody else can do to make you crash. we're working on the issues.
haha.. got me there erik. I never consider how to use a system dishonestly.. ack stupid ethics. they always get in the way...
3 attempts-3 disconnects. Not worth the effort. Considering the quality of the site , this is poor performance. after a year i would hope things would improve slightly. As for the points, a disconnect should not result in any points loss.
Keep trying.
That's true, I lost my rating from 1389 to 12** and I got really up set because it was a hard work setting up this rating. I was winning the game and than the server lags up. I think in this cases, the rating should not fall and the opponent gets his rating /2 for playing and understand with calm what happened. Please masters of programming, fix this bug for all the chess players that love this community!!
Still too many disconnects, hope the problem will be fixed soon
I only started playing on this site today. I have played 4 games (all v diferrent players) and 2 were disconnected. One at my my opponents end which meant he lost the game and one at my end meaning I lost the game. I hope this 50% disconnect rate is not typical of what to expect. I was considering upgrading to a premium membership but there does not seem to be much point if the system is flaky. What experience have others had?
Since my earlier post I have read the instructions
It is a beta and I was using Internet Explorer.
I have switched to Firefox 3.0.3 and played 5 more 'long' games without any disconnect problems.
I like the interface on Chess.com and will continue to use it.
Thanks erik
Erik: I think u r right. If no penalty for disconnect, there would be plague of disconnects. Unless there is a way to determine disconnects by the server and not the player. So far my disconnect rate today is about 4 in roughly 3 hours. Interestingly, one of them is when I was playing 2 simultaneous games.
So far I have 7 disconnects. My rating dropped to 1200, but I managed to raise that up again to the 1300 level. In checking, the number of people logged in ranged from 500- 800 when disconnected. So far, I have not been dropped when players were below 500.. perhaps that is significant in reconfiguring the server program.
