Laggers, sanbaggers and unrated games

So I see this happening on this site in particular, where people downplay their rating by playing low rated players and resigning, and get their rating to lets say to 1100, and when you, a 1400-1700 rated player, play against them, they're actually a 1900 player. This happens a lot in bullet games.

Then you have the people who lag, where you premove and they take their time, yet they've got just as much time on the clock as you do. Shouldn't these people have a lot less time on their clock?

And then theres the unrated games, where people look like they're 1200 rated but are just as well 2300. Is this how we want it here? Unrated games should be banned.

am an avid unrated game player, and as in any format i play to win, love the way you can take part in a competeive game, but not suffer adversley if im roundly trashed. Allows me to enjoy the game i love, my other format i tend to is 10 min or 15/10 tourneys. My main rated games are played in otb format for my club Chorlton Chess Club Manchester.

There are several reasons for unrated games. I played an exhibition of 7 unrated games recently.

In rated games your "real" rating might be quited different than rated games and that is one reason for unrated games. There are sevedral reasons to have the unrated option.

If people in bullet delbertly make their rating lower--what does it get them?

Sorry, but I cannot understand what you're saying, because of your complete lack of punctuation marks.

@ponz: I can understand that, but I'm talking about those who pop up in the live chess with a greatly deflated rating and play as if they're 1000 points higher. That is the equivalent of cheating.

hope that helps Same Old Fears ie now has punctuation

What does it matter that in bullet games some people delibertly get a lower rating so they can beat someone who then has a higher rating? I mean bullet chess is not so much about ratings is it?

To tell the truth I do not understand the psychology of bullet chess.

It does matter, because it, at least for me, decides what playing style I choose in the game. If I meet a 1200 rated player, I'm gonna use a lot of easy dirty tricks that will make me make quick wins, while if I meet a higher rated player I will chose a completely different strategy. This goes all the way, from openings to endgame. So if I meet a 1200 guy who's actually a 1900, I'm gonna lose. If he lags as well, its a clear loss, unless I get lucky and the guy blunders or something.

I do not understand playing so differently based on your opponents rating, especially online.

I mean, I am an 1800 in blitz online but a 2000 offline simply since I have a terrible mouse.

It isn't your opponent's fault that you were basically sandbagging vs. them

Try playing against an unrated player at a tournament that happens to be 2200+ FIDE. Much worse than this.

Here is a good example of a possible sandbagger(s).   Black (1756) was killed by this supposed 1282.  On further investigation, the 1282 plays all games unrated (350 that I can see) and has taken many bigger scalps.

I originally thought that if 911targa wants to play all his games unrated, he shouldn't be allowed to advertize for games as a 1282 rated player.  I worried that his opponent would honestly be concerned about losing to such a low rated player.

Then I check out his opponent, Shadow_Bishop and see that he is no longer a 1756. His rating has fallen to 1475 as the result of losing 11 games in a row.  Who knows what his real rating should be?

So instead of a low rated player beating a much higher one, we have the game of two players whose ratings says absolutely nothing about their strengths.

Perhaps the PGN game score should be modified to make "Unrated" prominent so that no one would bother to waste any time on such games.

I'm pissed off that I wasted any time analyzing the games of these bozos.

Last night I was playing drunk blitz.  I don't want to play rated games like that.

But seriously, if you're annoyed by an unrated game, just resign and find a new one.  Totally painless.

I like unrated, it helps me relax and play without thinking of the result, besides, who cares about ratings on chess.com? There are no unrated tournament games (OTB) which are what matter. Just play chess.

If you don't care about ratings, why not play rated games?  If it doesn't mean anything, why can't you just relax?

I know that ratings don't mean much but they can be a useful guide for players to gauge their opponents.
