Being a paying member doesn't affect the amount of disconnects you get, and chess.com never said it did.

I find that different COMPUTERS disconnect at different rates.

Erik says he's working on fixing the problem. In the meantime, try playing more online chess.

Headmaster, this has been the topic of other forums.

Erik has apologized to users for how quickly live chess was formulated, activated and released while it had not been fully 'vetted' or tested to ensure disconnects do not happen to the users.     a completely new software package is preferable to re-working a known faulty software package.   ( a decision on which way to go - rework or completely redesigned package was made by Erik, after discussions with his programmers [not me].)

he has programmers working hard now, on devising a completely NEW live Chess for Chess.com.    This method of re-working it is preferred over merely 'patching' the existing system.

I could speculate that one or more of the modifications of the existing live-chess entailed a 'difficult-to-identify-conflict' resulting in disconnects for users, but that would be completely 'blue-sky' speculation.

Patience is needed at this time.  I got disconnected 9 times in the past two days as well.  life is what it is,  - therefore, see post # 7, therobz has it right.Smile

    please be patient.

Building Chess.com: Part 14 - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

You know how everyone thinks their own baby is so cute, but then when the kid grows up and sometimes you look back on the baby pictures and realize - that was an UGLY baby!? Well, that certainly hasn't happened to me or my 4 kids (:D), but it does happen. In fact, it even happened with Chess.com, which is, effectively, one of my children. And now that Chess.com is more grown up I can look out and say that our Chess.com child named "Live Chess" is ugly.

Let me explain more: Live Chess is actually very nice looking! It has really cool features, a great interface, and is fun......... IF it works for you. It is ugly in the sense that it doesn't work for many people. And to those of you I only have 2 words - VERY SORRY. :( We started out with such a grand vision for Live Chess, but failed to build it out in a careful manner. We pushed too hard too fast. We added features faster than we could test them. And we did it all with too few people. And so we have what we have now - a beautiful, dysfunctional live chess server. So sorry.

Here is the plan: we are now rebuilding Live Chess from the ground up and doing it right. Carefully. Patiently. Measuredly. And we have the best of the best of the best working on it - the pioneers of live web technologies like Jetty and cometd. We don't yet have a timeframe, but we do have a promise - it will be what you expect: a stable place to come and play chess and interact with friends. Getting disconnected is the most frustrating thing in the world, and it is what is really slowing the growth of Chess.com (though we are still growing really fast). We know that once we fix Live Chess... let's just say that we're excited :)

This is by far the best chess site on the net! The way Erik and his team work hard to improve the site is great and I'm sure the Live Chess part will be a success as well as the rest of Chess.com! Cool

I have lost points to live.chess when i was clearly winning. In one case I actually won but was disconnected before it posted my win so i lost by disconnect i.e. abandonement of the game but this must also be taken in the context that others have to by disconnects to me at a point where i was losing. my wireless tends to show me a weak signal strength on my  firefox when disconnects occur so i either move it around to try to get a better signal or wait for  awhile. I have noticed that when i am disconnected i also cannot get msn either so it is not always a problem solely based on the current programs. If points are more important then it is better to abort a game with a much lower rating at the start of the game then to lose many points as opposed to losing less points to a more evenly matched player if a disconnect were to occur.

ive only been disconnected a few times, yes it is aggravating, yes it ruins good games, yes i lost ratings points...do i care, no...this site is great, it offers many other features than live play...rating points dont matter its a fact of life...chess games are not life or death, if you lose one because of disconnection oh well move on get over it...im waiting patiently for the next version to come out, in the mean time im playing online and live as much as possible cause i just love to play   Tongue out

You said in post # 10 and I quote: " We don't yet have a timeframe.."

Is it possible to say that it will be less than a year, before full implementation? or whatever period of time.

I do realize that a specific time frame ties your hands down and opens the door to commentaries, judgemental remarks and possibly criticism.

What I am asking is what is an outside date when the project will be up and running. You can use the worst scenario to give a projection, and any projection that you give out can be used for the evaluation of future projects. This approach will give you a very valuable measuring stick for other long term projects.

sorry. sorry. sorry. sorry. please don't use live chess if you can't control yourself after losing a game despite our warning. there are many other things to do on this site than play live. sorry. sorry. sorry. sorry. sorry.

I find it quite interesting that nobody (myself included) has ever disconnected using Google Chrome. Everybody who has it says they've been fine. Try it out. You've been warned about live chess, you can't complain. Nobody told you to use it, they told you it was faulty. Would you rather there was no live at all?

OK - I UNCONDITIONALLY WITHDRAW MY REMARK AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE.

However, it is very true that I have been unreasonable disconnected many many times and that is very frustrating in chess.

The reaction was overwhelming! Thank you to all who try to improve live chess. We need a aystem that works.
