Awesome milestone for us today! Live Chess tournaments are now available to all premium members! Laughing

Like it says in the warning, this is very much a public beta stage: You might encounter issues (although it already seems very solid), and the team is still actively working on interface improvements.

If you're unsure how these work or how to register, please review the new FAQ.

Please share your questions, impressions, suggestions, ideas, or war stories!

when will free members be able to play in live tournaments?

I haven't actually played in a live event yet.  Seven rounds is quite a lot.  I'd suggest doing this in smaller bites.  Maybe you could fill up four man quads.  That way you only need three rounds.

I think this is a major step in the right direction. Perhaps we could get seeded single-elimination tournaments for those who don't want to play a bunch of rounds. Thanks to the support staff for putting this together. A lot of members really wanted this.

They can't win :). They are removed from standings. What exactly do you need to know?

    Cheers!

Also, I found ,yself googling "what time is it" because I knew what time the tourney was supposed to start, but didn't know what time the server thought it was.

The start time is relative to your very own computer clock! No need to call Greenwich! :D

In the one tourney I was in, the cancellation code was tested and works. It might be useful for a dialog box for info though, or make the "cancelled" in red or something.

    Good point

We'll be adding some pages to the main site in the not-too-distant future (not 100% sure when they will be complete) that will show details about past Live tournaments, similar to the existing pages for e-chess tournaments.

The system as it stands is inadequate.  It is misleading to list numerous tournament start times when few if any begin due to player involvement.  Currently, I must wait and avoid playing games repeatedly to make sure I am available for a tournament that I signed in for.  Then, my time waiting was shown to be wasted because no-one else wanted to play.  People try to play and then the tournament cancels.  Your current setup asks the players to just hang around and continually wait for the next starting interval.  One word for this system: FAIL!

If you MUST automate it, then have the server setup continuous tournaments that register one after another as they end.  The tournament stay open until a certain minimum is filled.  Once the minimum is met, the server announces the tournament will begin in X minutes so late players can jump in.

VERY annoying experience today with the constant cancels and waiting.

    Suggestions:

    1. The tournaments should list the rating ranges and other pretinent information in the title.  I should not have to point to tournament listings to determine if they are the rating range I need or can play.
    2. With the current system, it does not appear that I can sort the tournaments so that I see all the 3 mins or all the 1 min tournaments.  I would like to be able to filter the tournaments to only see the ones relevant to my clock preferences.
    3. It would be nice to have a flyout/pop-up of the people already signed up for a tournament by hovering over the number of players waiting list.  I would like to be able to see the rating variations within the group and possible read their profile without having to join the tourney and then checking the list internally.

    1. you are only shown tournaments you can join (except for those marked OPEN)

    2. we are only showing 6 tournaments at a time right now, plus one open. there aren't many that are the same.

    3. great suggestion!
