A GM missed this; How about you?

    In "Attack & Defence" by Dvoretsky & Yusupov, the latter takes a chapter to discuss "Missed Brilliancy Prizes", humorously suggesting that he happens to be a leading expert in this field!

    Yusupov is much too hard on himself. In the following position he faces the program Rebel 8 in a 30/G match game. In time-trouble, he allowed a draw with 1.Bh7+, Kh8  2.Bg6+, Kg8. He was discouraged from playing 1.Qxd1! due to the resource 1... Bg5! but missed a winning conclusion which was discovered the next day by some chess fans who did not give up on white's attack.

    Can you find it? (Yes, 1.Qxd1 is the first move.)

    The first 3 moves were obvious, the fourth not so much

    Would someone please tell me why it is not a mate in 3 for White after:

    1. Qxd1   Bg5
    2. Rh8+   Kxh8
    3. Qh5+  Kg8
    4. Qh7#

    It's quite possible to miss it in time trouble, especially when playing vs a chess engine.

    Indeed;

    Time trouble in itself is devilish, and the psychological pressure of facing a silicon only magnifies it.

    As I noted, Yusupov is too hard on himself, or perhaps he has a delightful sense of humor!

    One of the cooler lines involves Qa1+! I actually struggled with how to meet 4. ... Qxg5 when looking at 4. fxg5.
