So is the rule of oppositon this: you always want an odd number of spaces between the kings when i is your turn to move?

You want an odd number when it is your opponent's move.

     Fascinating.  White takes the opposition 7x and outflanks 3x and moves the
rook only 1x. 
     This tells me endgames are more interesting than I give them credit, and
reaffirms my belief that no chess player ever completely masters endgames.
