white coule play 4.qd1.. obviously it leaves black with the advantage, being up a whole queen, but it does prevent the immediate checkmate

This puzzle doesn't work as a puzzle if it relies on a blunder.  I end up wasting a bunch of time looking for variations that can't be refuted only to find out I've long ago dismissed the purported "solution".
