This is called Legal's mate.  I'm not bragging, but I've pulled it off at least 3 times on yahoo chess.

eaglex: your right, after 1. Nxe5, if black responds with 1... dxe5.  This basically neutralizes the trap, and it becomes a trade. 2. Qxg4

I've also tried this trap with Blacks Knight at c6.  In this situation it's a gamble. If your opponent is greedy and blinded by the free Queen, you have him.  Or it could end up like this:
