White to play and mate in four.

Hint:White would like to play Ra2+ followed by Qb4 mate, but the immediate 1 Ra2 fails to 1...Qxa2 pins White Queen. On the other hand, White has no time for the cautious 1 Kf8, because then Black can bail out with 1...Qb2!,which delays mate beyond the fourth move. White must remove his king from the a2-g8 diagonal with gain of tempo. How?

1 Kf8! and now black cannot check without giving white mate in one move - so it is mate in only two more, using the original idea.

The problem should be a mate in three.

If 1 Kf8 then 1...Qb2! delays the mate beyond the fourth move.

1.Kf8 Qb2! 2 Qc5+ Ka2 3 Qd5+ Ka1 4 Bxf5 Qa3+ 5 Kf7 Qf8+! 6 Kxf8 h5 7 Qa2#

and that is mate in seven. The problem is mate in four.

It can be mate in 2 but as the Question was MATE IN FOUR

your idea was probably the best
