Got a smothered mate against my mum somewhere, although it doesn't appear THAT often, it's worth knowing about, just because of the elegance factor when it does appear :)

Just remember that it doesn't work if Black has a knight on f6 (that overlooked fact once cost me a win in a tournament).

When you move the queen in to check the king, if black has a knight on f6, then he can play NxQ. This leaves the rook guarding the critical f file, so that you cannot play Nf7#. (If you play Nf7+, white responds with RxN.)
