Second? The first is hard... if you found the first it's because you found the solution (or you went randomly).
Not really. Looking at the situation you realize that White is in some pretty big trouble. Black has a mate in 1 ready to play. There's only two ways to prevent mate next move: 1. Nf7+, which does nothing more than lose a knight, or the text move, which serves two purposes, only one of which is to prevent the immediate mate.

once you relized that black could mate in one move, you do what you can to stop that. then since you haven't fully prvented black from checking you, you need to keep checking otherwise he will check mate you. the rest came naturally.
Somehow I was able to find the solution fairly easily without moving pieces...Looks like I am getting better
there is a forced mate in 6. 1. Nf7+ Kg8 2.Ne7+ Kxf7 3. Re4+ Ke8 4. Nf5+ Nxe4 5. Qe6+ Kd8 6. Rc8# or Qc8# or Qe7#
robbie99: "there is a forced mate in 6. 1. Nf7+ Kg8"
But suppose 1. . . RxN?
Tricky.. but found the solution.. Nice
Once you see how much trouble white is in, you realise the only way out for Black is to either pressure the queen to prevent mate or keep the King in check, after that it comes reasonably logically.
wel... i don't really mean to spoil it but black can stall with 1...Qh1+ 2.Rxh1 (to keep the c1 rook) - Nh3+ 3.-Rxh3-h6
and mate is now far far away... in seven!
nice one...
I'd cry if I played black there.
Lol the first part wasn't that hard cuz i was playing for a smothered mate. For some reason i didn't consider the king taking, noobish of me. Lol if i considered the rook move it probably would have taken me alot longer XD.
this is something i am sure 90% of us would not have found in a real chess game. Especially OTB, but when you say PUZZLE! it makes finding things easier because you know there i something to find :P
Nice
