why not just make the pawn move at the start?

 Because 1...Nxb7 2. axb7 Kxb7 and it's a draw because it's impossible to mate with just two knights.

Very nice puzzle. Harder than the title suggests.

It's possible to mate with two knights if the opponent has a pawn.  Because you can remove the chance to stalemate but it's hard (close to impossible) to do in practise.

Wow lol I sent a request to metaridley asking him to be my friend. The next time I start this puzzle I started doing all these moves like the solution rang in my head. The next thing I knew was that I completed the puzzle :) I do now believe this puzzle was easy- you just got to think a bit.
