What about giving extra support to the pawn? White doesn't necessarily have to lose it.

I think Boring304's suggestion of 2. Ne2 does actually mean black still loses a piece... could someone confirm/disprove this?
I guess a piece is still lost but after Ne2
Another idea is after Ne2!, Bxe5, Bxe5 wait for 0-0 and then play Rxe5! as white's knight is pinned against mate why 0-0?, since white is attacking on the queen side, it is logical to castle short but I guess if white is prudent he can avoid the trap
