I am a greeter on chess.com and am surprised at the number of new players who

want a game then abandon it after one or two moves.I think i have played one full game out of the last thirty.Anyone else find this happens to them.

But when they resign, they lose?

I wonder if they don't initially realize that "Greeter games" are online (aka correspondence speed) games. I just joined today and I was first 'hit' with a message about playing a greeter. It wasn't until after I accepted that I noticed that this was a correspondence game. I immediately cancelled the game, but maybe others didn't notice until they got a response or two from the greeter - then they cancelled.

I may play some long-term games, but I initially joined to do some 'quick & dirty' interactive/live games.  Maybe they should downplay the 'play a greeter first' type message, or make it VERY clear what type of game it is before the starting the game.  Some people may think it is clear, but I didn't notice it until afterwards, so I'm sure that happens to others as well.

    Just a thought from a newbie! :)

    Greeter Games are offered:-

    1. To establish  Chess.com skill  ratings

    2. To help newcomers find their way around the site.

    3. By volunteer members to make joiners  feel at home and help reduce the work loads on hard -working staff.

When I joined (not so long ago) situation was opposite. My greeter abandoned game without playing single move.

That is true. When I was a greeter, I constantly got "Hurry up" and "Its your turn" in the chat box. I guess they can't read the into blurb that explains correspondence v. live.

I think it is fair to say that for some as yet unknown reason Greeters are not well supported by the site and many become somewhat disenchanted. For example when I volunteered to help as Greeter I quickly found many beginners were better players than myself ( I struggle to stay around 1320 rating) and I was losing too many of my hard-fought rating points. The site has no remedy or recompense for this aspect, although it would seem possible for an approved Greeter  to be given a second "Greeter Game Only" account in which to operate without detriment to the normal member account. It may be argued that points levels do not matter, but it should be remembered that your level often determines your eligibility for some very desirable matches and tournaments which play such an important part in the attractions of this very very good site.

Um, unless they've changed it since I did it, greeter games are unrated.

Don't forget that Greeter Games are unrated.

Playing 1200-rated players whose rating has not been established puts your rating points at risk; but OTOH, there's the prospect of making a newcomer feel welcome and thereby enriching the site for everyone.

Thank you for the important clarifications, Flamma_Aquila and artfizz... the damage referred to is done of course in any Greeter follow-up games as are needed to complete process , as was customary for me to accept. With no approved Greeter Status, such as I have suggested ,in being , I now avoid the 1200 rating as far as possible.

The follow-up greeter games should be called GRATER games - since they grind away your (g)rating.
