Why doesn't the king capture h4?  Wouldn't that make a mess of this puzzle?

Because then Kf3, Kg4, Kxd2.  It might be a slightly better move because then black keeps his rook, but points-wise it is the same.  (bishop for pawn or rook for bishop)

BorgQueen, if the King captures the h pawn, then white responds with 3. Nf3+ (not 3. Nc4), winning the bishop immediately.
