This is a puzzle that I saw in an online article, which I thought was good. It's a very simple puzzle in that you have to find only one move ~ the best move for black. Here it is; I hope somebody finds it good like I do.

The reason I liked the puzzle is that it makes you think; the move suggested is not something that an average player would think of as a good move and would dismiss it and look for something else.

Since this is a really simple puzzle I thought I would ask a question. If black plays the move, what is or should be white's response to it?

Are you saying white should resign? I don't think it's that bad for white, although I think black has great play here.

I wouldn't mind if you elaborated a little as I am not that good and might be missing something.

Well, if white plays Qxf6 then he obviously gets checkmated. White has both a hanging rook and the rook on f1 being threatened by the bishop, so he's going to lose a lot of material and the game will finish quickly.

To answer the question though, the best move is probably Qg3.

White is hurting. 2.Qxf6 is evidently losing by force. 2.Qg3 salvages something, but then I see black either picking up the exchange and/or continuing to inflict dental-drill like pain along the g-file.

I thought of both Qd4 and Qf6, though the former seemed natural to me.
