Pointless point: Promoting to a rook would also be mate.

Or a Bishop, or a Knight...

i think that the first one was  better than the last

Nope. I thought so at first too, but then I saw 3. ...Qxh1+. The discovered check in this particular double check is actually redundant - the vital piece that delivers mate is the promoted pawn.

doodinthemood

I know it's just an irritant, but 2... Qd1+ prevents mate in 3, and is why I spent a long time over this puzzle.

raygarrety

thanks  doodinthemood I really appreciate your point...

No probs. It's not really a biggy. The pattern you've shown is a useful one to know. When composing problems it's good to check all checks though. I have a tendency to smother the white king in pieces when I compose. It's amateur, but it works Wink

Terrible puzzle. After h7 black plays Qd1+ and there is no mate in three

There's no mate in three after 2... Rg7 either.

You're wasting people's time Ray... a mate in three puzzle has to mean mate in three.

Adryan_18

nice puzzle. its not mate in 3 but still nice one :)

raygarrety

thanks Adryan_18, Im trying to define here the virtue of understanding puzzle that there are many cases that you will not rely only on what is given in the board..

Why would anyone move the king to e7?
