benws has a good point. I looked at the position for a while, and concluded that White does NOT have mate in 5 if Black moves to the back rank.

Just take the rook.


The point was that the puzzle is cooked because there is no mate in 5. Granted, White will win eventually with his huge material advantage after taking the rook.

I know what you mean because it's not forced and leaves the king with some choices; maybe they placed the king there thinking they would take the knight right after.

How could he do that when the pawn on e4 is protecting the knight?

After taking the rook, if they were to move where they did, didn't see the checkmate later on.
