How so, from what I could tell it's mate just as quickly in any variation?

A bunch of forcing checks in a superior position, up more than a queen, isn't much of a puzzle....

Well I am not sure, but 1...Bf7 2.Bxe6 2... Ke7 3.Qxf7+ 3...Kd6 seems to has some potencial. I haven't got enough time to make detailed analyse, but there may be something that mekes black life little longer :o)

After kd6 you get get Rc1.  Now the black king can't move so he moves a pawn.  Now Qd7#

So you end up living 5 moves instead of 6.
