The title is a clue. Enjoy! Note that black has just played Bxg5. (Edit: The puzzle is now "White to Move".)

Ok, so black has just stuck his foot in a bucket and fallen down the stairs.

Will we see this one in The Three Stooges Teach Chess?

hey c'mon ppl, silverpanic's other puzzle (also from one of her games - and she found it during the game!) - is quite good - good enough to make me put her in my 'tracked member' list.

Actually, I'm a guy. Yes, black put his/her foot in the bucket; black should have played Qxg5.

That was my point. That actually would have added to the puzzle if you had indicated where the bishop captured from, showing the foot going firmly in the bucket (" Note that black has just played 25. ... Be7xg5??; this loses!  25. ... Qxg5! would have held, and most probably won for black" would have been a nice intro....).

Did you "cheapo" your opponent with  25. Ng5?! earlier; again, this would have added, and could have placed it in the "When faced with two possible moves, analyze all subsequent checks and captures" category, as well as "making the next-to-last mistake." All of that is valuable for any player.

Just to try to help you, what is you rating? this is the 7th easiest puzzle I have ever solved in my life it took me about 1 seconds to solve, from memory and anyone correct me here, there are only 7 checkmate networks no more no less and this one is the very first one, the king has no way out, he forgot to open a window or a door, such as moving one of his pawns to either h6 or g6 at the appropriate time .

If you want more explanations on all of the seven mate networks I will be honored to give them to you.

Okay yeah bro, way to say you're being helpful when your real intenion is obviously just to be obnoxiously condescending. My rating is like 1540 or something, if your question wasn't rhetorical, but I don't think that explains my confusion with this puzzle. There was something wierd about the page when I saw it and because it said "black to play" I thought it was black to move. I had no idea what they would want black to do, so I just clicked foward and saw the solution as white's win. It didn't make sense as a puzzle for black, so I asked what was up. I understand now.

All that aside, I am curious as to what you're talking about with that "mate networks" stuff, so definitely clue me in if you feel like it. Chill out on the being really patronizing and cocky maybe though. Just a thought.

okay - makes no difference :)

Funny how few people bother when they refer to me as 'he'. [I ignore it 70% of the time; correct them 30%; explode 10%]

to LisaV: :). Some years ago, whenever any male referred to me online as 'he', I made sure I referred to him as 'SHE' in bold capitals. Worked wonderfully! I'd completely forgotten about that trick!

I apologize that I offended you, I sincerely had no intentions.

I will re-read my comments in the future to prevent this type of wording.

You could have mentionned in your comment that you had read it was black to play.

I did recheck the puzzle and it does say white to move underneath the board. The only reference to black is in the very first line where it says: " Note that black has just played Bxg5."

On another note you are a much stronger player than me.

Where I to mention mate networks, I may have used the wrong word again, I am french and at times I do not use the right words, even when I look them up in a dictionary, perhaps mate themes or mate final positions is a better expression.

Even though there are many ways to checkmate with pawns and pieces I was referring to the basics checkmate diagrams that one should have in his head all of the time, without them it can be difficult to checkmate. For instance 2 rooks vs king, knight and bishop, knight and queen etc.

Cool man. Apology accepted. Yeah, I rechecked the puzzle too but when I was on it the first time, I clicked something or something and for some reason I went back to black's Bxg6 and then it said black to move for some reason. I can't prove it. You'll just have to trust me. But anyways yeah no offense taken didn't know English wasn't your native language we're all good.

I challenged you on online chess! Let's find out who is the stronger player!

I am not refusing your challenge but I cannot accept it now as I have 4 games going, two where started by mistake as I clicked on "let's play" under the "Game" heading, I was trying to respond to my opponent move and did not know how.

And since the only way out I saw was to resign, and I cannot do that after the first move, I continued to play.

Is there a way other than using this forum to let you know that I will play later Sunday or Monday?

Is there a way to cancel a game started by mistake?

Is there a way to play faster with an opponent than to continously check my e-mail to see if my opponents have made their move?

As for who is the strongest, you are likely at this point in time as I have played very few games in the last 30 years or so, however to this day I continue to study the game in books, my most recent is the new Silman's Complete end game course. I also replay a lot of games on the internet be it recent or older games by any player, I naturally have my favorites.

But watch out in the next few months I will have acquired my skills back and learned new ones and who knows?? Maybe I will be stronger than you.

Have a beautiful day!

Paul--Chess.com does not currently let you cancel games, although I think it might be a nice thing to add. You can draw, although I doubt your opponent will accept that. You can play live if you want to play faster games, but it is still having some bugs getting worked out. Also if you stay on chess.com while your opponents are online usually the two of you will just make moves as the other does, so at least clusters of moves are played live without the burden of checking email all the time. I don't know anything about any books, but I'd be glad to play you any time. I sent you a message. As some say down here in the states, holla.

Actually, if you haven't moved, you can hit the "Abort" button below the draw and resign buttons.

What happened is that I set the focus to the beginning screen, but the beginning to black to move. So, if somebody hits the restart button he/she will be set to black to move. That's my bad; I'll repost the puzzle if I can.
