    If after 2.Qg8! Kxg8?? then 3. Rxf8+  Rxc7 with two extra passed pawns and an exchange up.

    Black has to keep both threats (to the back rank with Rxf1# and to the h2 with the Qxh2#) as the black queen hangs, so Qg8+ distracts black from this and both sides must repeat the position to avoid defeat.
